Turning right out of Leven Canyon Road (which leads to the Leven Canyon
lookout walk and recreation area) travel a further 1 klm down the road until you reach a gate on the right hand side of the road. There is a clearing where you can park to access the walk area and plenty of signs warning you of the walk your about to take!
On the walk trail you commence a descent towards the river at the base of the canyon, the scenery on this walk keeps you interested as you descend firstly an easy gradient for 500m and then 500m of steep a steep staircase where you come out on a bridge across the canyon river. This is the bridge that the above sign refers to.
The bridge allows you to see up and down the canyon and follow the path of
the river. This part of the trip is well worth the effort for the spectacular scenery of a cascading river and high canyon walls.
The best is yet to come though as you cross the bridge and follow the trail to the right. The trail on the left is the Penguin
Cradle Trail which we are yet to explore. Following this trail the track becomes a little more rugged and there are spots where a trip or fall might see you plunge 30m or so into the river below – be careful! After about 1 klm from the bridge you come to one of the amazing vistas I have seen, which we believe was a place called “Devils Elbow”. The canyon river bends at 270 degrees and a smaller stream meets the main river. The canyon walls are a staggering height and the river drops rapidly, cascading over many rocks smoothed by the constant barrage of water and rock over millions of years. Spend an hour here and admire the beauty. You could easily spend all day!! We stayed about 2 hours at this spot, firstly admiring the beauty and then having some fun rock hopping over the boulders strewn across the river. We explored up and down the canyon and had an awesome time.
This spot is definitely worth a look!
PS: Leave 25 mins return to the bridge, a further 40 mins for the return to Devils Elbow and at least an hour exploring the canyon and admiring its beauty.
