What an awesome day we had at the Australian Open Tennis.  We had tickets to the Hisense Arena, where there were four scheduled matches.

Baghdatis vs Ferrer (Mens)

V Williams v Bramner (Womens)

S Williams v Katrinova (Womens)

Tsonga v Dent (Mens)

The first match we arrived just before the conclusion of the first set.  Ferrer quickly took the second set and was 5 – 3 upo in the third before one of the biggest chokes I have seen in tennis happened.  Serving for the match Baghdatis broke back, took the momentum, the set and won the next two sets to achieve an upset over the number seventeen seed.  My thoughts on this match were for a player with a top 20 ranking Ferrer didn’t really have the firepower to match players equivantly ranked, certainly not the top 10 in the world.  I can see his ranking slipping quite drastically over coming tournaments.  We didn’t expect a 4.5 hour marathon after the first 2.5 sets, but that’s tennis.

What I had really come to see was the Williams sisters.  Venus was her usual relaxed self and really was just coasting with a straight sets victory.  Venus looked like she was at half pace going through the motions.  It was good to see her play but better to see Serena step it up in the following match.  Although this was a straight sets victory, Serena was a machine.  She is a truly trremendous athelete when you see her in action up close.  For me she was the pick of any player I saw today and well worth the price of admission just to see her.  Her shots and strength were amazing, her placement was incredible and I’ll say it again…she is a machine.  Quite understandable that she is number 1 in the world.  She demolished Katrinova, who on her day had beaten Serena in the past and probably today would have given Venus a run for her money or least pounced her into action.

The last match called for a change of seats, get a different perspective so to speak.  How important is it for us to get a different perspective in life with everything we do?  Contrast is very important!

Dent vs Tsonga.  We left after the the first two sets where Tsonga clearly had the lead, both momentum and on the scoreboard, winning the first two sets.

Leaving Melbourne Park, I will definately return.  It was an incredible experience.

An hour tram ride and 20 minute walk saw us back at the van where Bushman Bud watched Delaqua win her match whilst everyone else crashed out.
